If 2020 wasn’t difficult enough already, this year has seen a sharp increase in the number of scam phone calls. Some of these calls target UK bank customers. There have also been a huge number of calls where customers  impersonate public bodies like HMRC.

These HMRC scam calls in 2020 usually involve begin with an automated call. The caller advises that there is an outstanding tax bill, or fraud investigation, that they are chasing up. People who have received these scam HMRC calls then report that they are advised to press 1 in order to come to a resolution.

Anyone who does press 1 will be connected directly to one of the scammers. Their tactics include: lying, bullying and harassing. Their aim is to get your personal information and bank details so they can use them for the purposes of fraud.

What should I do if I receive a HMRC scam press 1 phone call?
