What is the HSBC new device text scam?

These HSBC scam texts usually with a warning that a payment has been attempted from your bank account from a new, or on this occasion unregistered device. There are slight variations in the message, but the gist is always that your HSBC bank account has been accessed from a new device and you can click on a link to a website to update and cancel.

However, links provided in a scam HSBC new device text are invariably not to the HSBC website, but rather to a phishing website designed to steal your personal and banking information. In the text reported on the 31st October 2020, from the number +447888574634, the link was to a website called hs-cancel(.)net. This is not the real HSBC website, however it is designed to look like the real thing in the hope of tricking visitors to input their bank login details. Anyone who does so will be giving their bank account login on a plate to scammers. They will then use these details for the purposes of fraud.
