@HMRCgovuk @HMRCpressoffice @Ofcom Received an automated scam call this morning, purportedly from HMRC. How do scammers manage to set up phone lines? Surely can’t be that hard to stop at outset? #hmrcscam pic.twitter.com/H97clq7wll

It has been reported by various UK citizens that a recent tactic employed by scammers is to set up phone lines and leave messages on private landline telephone numbers across the UK. They often pretend to work for HMRC and suggest that the recipient of the call has a tax fraud investigation against them. The scammers then advise that the potential victim press 1 on the key pad to discuss the matter further. Anyone who does this may be re-directed to an expensive premium rate telephone number.
To add insult to injury they will will then try to convince anyone who calls back to provide personal and banking information. Any details you provide will be use for the purposes of fraud.
Do not answer the phone to 0161 207 7302.
