How does this scam work?

UK residents have reported receiving suspicious calls from the number 0203 004 0997.  Potential victims receive a call from this number out of the blue. They are then informed that a tax fraud case is being launched by HMRC against the recipient of the call. Subsequently they are advised to press 1 to get the situation resolved. Do not press 1 or any other automated options because this could lead to being connected to a premium rate phone line.

The other tactic employed by the scammers is to try to get potential victims to divulge personal and bank details. Any personal information that you share may be used for the purposes of fraud.
