The Occupational English Test (OET) is an examination designed to test whether the level of non-native English speakers is high enough to use in a professional medical environment. The GMC began to accept the OET as an acceptable pathway for proving English language ability in 2018. From that point it became an alternative to the IELTS exam for medics looking to prove their English Language ability.
The OET Exam Format
The Occupational English Test lasts for 2 hours and 45 minutes. This is divided into four parts:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
The listening part of the test consists of 3 tasks. Part A (15 minutes) consists of a gap-fill exercise and listening for detail; Part B (10 minutes) is 6 questions where the test-takers ability to listen for gist is tested. Part C has 2 recordings and tests the ability to listen for gist, the main idea and attitudes.
