The Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) are the professional medical body that regulates the recruitment and practice of nurses and midwifes in the United Kingdom.

If you are a nurse or midwife living in the UK, but you received your accreditation abroad then you can phone the NMC international enquiries number 020 7333 6600. This number is for all overseas enquiries relating to the NMC. Nurses can phone this number to check if their nursing qualifications gained abroad can be used to register as a nurse or midwife in the UK. If you are calling to follow up on a registration enquiry, then be sure to have your PRN to hand.

NMC English Language Enquiries

Foreign nurses who gained their qualifications in a non-native english speaking country, will need to prove that their English is good enough to practice in a clinical setting.  This can be done by either taking the Occupational English test (OET), or  the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

If you decide to go down the British Council IELTS route then you will need to get a band 7 overall with at least the following scores in the following bands:

  • Writing 6.5
  • Speaking 7
  • Listening 7
  • Reading 7

Meanwhile nurses taking the OET route will need  the following scores in each area:

  • Listening 30/42
  • Reading 30/42
  • Writing 25/38
  • Speaking 26/39

If you have any questions about language requirements for foreign nurses practicing in the UK then phone the NMC on 020 7333 6600. For example they can advise whether your score in a recent IELTS or OET test is sufficent to fulfil this requirement.
