Incorporated in 1975, Kenana Sugar Company have become the largest producer of white sugar in the world and one of Africa’s biggest Agro-industrial companies. A whole city has built up around the Kenana Sugar factory providing amenities to its 12,000 employees including schools, hospitals. There is even an airstrip that serves the refinery. Kenana is located near Rabak on the banks of the White Nile, 250 km south of the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
Kenana Sugar Company Sugar Production
Kenana Sugar Company produce over 400,000 tonnes of refined sugar per year. The company employ a network of 340 kilometres of canals and 6 pumping stations in order to irrigate individual sugar cane fields. Altogether the company have 50,000 hectares of sugar cane fields. When ready the sugar is picked and sent via the Kenana Sugar Plant network of lorries to the sugar plant. At the factory the sugar canes are pulped and then heated with water to become a juice. When cooled the sugar is put through a centrifuge to remove the sugar crystals from the syrup. The sugar crystals are then dried and before being sent for packing and delivery.
