Name Changes
The Currys story began when Henry Curry, a Leicester bicycle builder, opened his first shop in that city in 1888. Additions were made to the Currys name in 1897 when his sons joined the business and the name was changed to C. Curry and Sons. Under their influence the company was set on a steady financial footing, allowing it to grow and diversify it’s range of products. By 1927, the year the company was first floated on the stock market, goods sold in store included radios, gramaphones and electrical equipment, alongside its original product: bicycles.
Bikes continued to feature among the products on sale right up to the 1960s when they dropped them to concentrate their branding identity around electrical equipment. The company continued to grow reaching it’s pinnacle in the 70s and 1980s; decades which saw the high street electrical market dominated by the big four: Currys, Dixons, Rumbelows and Comet.
The battle was won by Dixons who ended up buying Currys in 1984. However they allowed them to operate as a seperate brand until they merged Currys with one of their other acquisitions to make the store we see on the high streets today: Currys PC World.
