Victims receive a text message from a normal seeming mobile phone number. In the example below a Twitter user reports being sent a message from the phone number +447378911984.

The text includes a message inviting them to phone the premium rate number 09095569786 in order to retrieve a voicemail. Of course the voicemail message does not exist. Instead victims are connected to the premium rate number. They will be encouraged to stay on the phone as long as possible because each minute they stay on the line their charge will go up by at least £3.60.
